Oh hai new site theme, how's it going?

Those sharp-eyed followers of this blog (yeah yeah, hi mom) will likely have noticed by now that I have uploaded a new theme for the site! As much as I loved the incredibly inventive basic themes, I wanted an aesthetically appealing theme that mirrored both my deep interests as well as my creativity.

Actually no. That’s a complete lie. Fact #1: While I had originally wanted something different, our class was actually virtually ordered to change from the basic theme. Fact #2: Those of you who know me likely know that I am a HUGE fan of the show “LOST” on ABC. In fact at this very moment I am completely stoked for the premiere of the new (and final) season! *cough* on February 2nd at 8 PM EST, if you were wondering *cough* Thus combining these two facts, I naturally went to check out the themes that were available under the “Appearance” tab.

But alas, there were no premade LOST-related themes. Beyond that I couldn’t find more than two themes that looked like me. So I made the long trek across the internets to the shrine of Google. But alas, once again my searching proved fruitless, for there were no [free] LOST themes to be found. So… to make a long story short I decided to make my own theme, and have spent the past two nights staying up till 3 AM, slaving away in the dungeons of Photoshop. I hope you like it!

If I remember correctly from class, we were supposed to not only change our theme, but post about HOW we changed it and/or why we chose what we did. I gotta admit, I’m a little too lazy to do that right now… BUT I think I’m gonna put up a semi-tutorial-type-thing to let the other people in the class (and AROUND THE GLOBE) know not so much how I specifically made each element, but how they can edit it themselves pretty easily. Although I think someone in the class already posted on the topic, so maybe not…

Well I guess we’ll both have to wait and see! Anyways…

Happy Trails,

Sam.

Man I love Lost, can’t wait until Tuesday. I’ve actually just been starting to play with photoshop and wordpress (here is the site i’m running for a film festival at W&M if you’re interested: http://globalfilm2010.blogs.wm.edu/) and I’ve been thinking about starting up my own blog pretty soon. I’d love to see how you were able to do this theme, which is awesome.

Thank you both! And more importantly: I can’t wait for LOST either!! This Tuesday… so… close! I don’t think I’ve ever wanted the weekend to actually be over so quickly.

Austin: I’ve used Blogger + Photoshop in the past, but this is my first try using WordPress as well. Did you photoshop the film festival site you’re running as well or not? Either way it looks quite good! I actually really like all the photos in the header behind the text.

I spent all tonight putting up my sarcastic rant about the new Apple iPad, so I didn’t get around to doing a post about the theme yet. BUT you can expect it up if not tonight (Friday night) then Saturday if you are still interested!

Aren’t you glad you were ordered to do this? Your Lost inspired theme is pretty amazing. And, like I said, your telling a “digital story” through the very design of your site, from Hugo’s lotto numbers to the Dharma Bus in the sidebar. I just wish you had an image of Ben (my favorite character) somewhere.

Thanks! I used photoshop for a lot of the images and banners, but nothing else related to the theme. I see you just put up a video about your theme, which I’m about to watch. I’m excited to start a personal blog pretty soon. Also, I love the new “enter site” pic.

Tuesday is almost here. If I can just remain unspolied for two more days…

Jim Groom: Your comment inspired me. I didn’t actually realize that Ben WASN’T on the site! Thus, from last night onward you can find him with Locke/Alpert/Sun and others at the very bottom of every page with the statue.

Austin: Sure thing, and I hope my video helped at least a little. Thanks about the “Enter Site” pic, I was trying to make something sufficiently vague and weird enough to be on a LOST-themed site, haha. In 48 hours we will be sitting down to watch the second part of the two-hour premiere. Likely my head will have already exploded from the awesomeness…
